Mark Your Calendar: Flight of the Valkyries V

Is that annoying Atlantic Ocean stopping you from attending the Metal Female Voices Fest each year? Do you, like me, get depressed ever year in mid-October because you can’t attend a festival that’s completely all about the music you love?

Be sad no more, friends! Now’s your chance to attend Flight of the Valkyries, an all-female-fronted metal music fest now in its fifth installment! The show’s on November 19th at the Sonar in Baltimore, MD and will feature 7 awesome bands to keep your head banging all night!

And who are the wonderful bands you’ll have the pleasure of seeing that evening? Well, let’s start with the headliner:

Benedictum

“Following in the footsteps of such legendary bands as Warrior, Rough Cutt and Psychotic Waltz, BENEDICTUM are San Diego, California’s mightiest ambassadors to the world of heavy metal.

Invoking power reminiscent of early Rainbow and definitive sound of Savatage, BENEDICTUMS’s stylish, epic brand of metal delivers on all fronts: Aggressive riffs, fierce rhythms, strong melodies, shredding leads and delicate textures converge at the crossroads of tradition and 21st century innovation. Veronica Freeman’s vocal gymnastics are the pit-bull on the pant leg of heavy metal.”

Benedictum, veterans of FotV II and III, have released three albums to date. Their latest, Dominion, came out in February and was even featured on VH1′s That Metal Show as the Pick of the Week!

Benedictum are:

  • Veronica Freeman – Vocals
  • Pete Wells – Guitar
  • Chris Shrum – Bass
  • Mikey Pannone – Drums
  • Tony Diaz – Keys

DesDemon have been touring with Benedictum on their Path of the Valkyries tour. Their debut full-length, Through the Gates, was released this past summer and features guests such as Tim “Ripper” Owens, Sander Gommans, Joe Stump, and Amanda Somerville.

Their symphonic power metal prowess has since then cemented their reputation as an overall fantastic band. Echoterra just released their newest album Land of the Midnight Sun this past October along with a video for the song “All the Lies.” This is the first album with Melissa on vocals.

Echoterra are:

  • Melissa Ferlaak – Vocals

BRaVE

BRaVE is a progressive female-fronted rock/metal band hailing from the DC area. Their latest album, Monuments, is a culmination of their 10+ years together as a band and is their most accurate musical expression to date. Festival promoter Bobbie Dickerson has had her eye on this band for a while and finally got the chance to bring them to the FotV stage this year.

The band’s frontwoman, Michelle, commented, “We are thrilled and honored to be a part of the Flight of the Valkyries V festival this year.  Each year the festival brings such a high quality array of bands and we are so honored to be asked to play this year.  The tradition of this festival will no doubt continue for many years to come.”

  • Scott Loose – Guitar
  • Matt Kozar – Guitar
  • Trevor Schrotz – Drums

Cassandra Syndrome

“Hailing from Maryland, Cassandra Syndrome is a female-fronted operatic metal band. This passionate, engaging act strikes the perfect balance between playful and sinister. Cassandra Syndrome is an intimate theater of darkness and seduction.

Eschewing the synthesizer-laden stereotypes of symphonic metal, Cassandra Syndrome (formed in 2005) revolutionizes the genre with a unique blend of axe-heavy melodic metal and operatic vocals. The powerful alliance of Joe Cariola’s punishing bass, scathing riffs of Jen Tonon’s rhythm guitar, and throbbing beats of Jay Jericho’s drums create a driving ground assault which weakens your defenses before being met by the searing lead lines of guitarist Chris Kackley. Above it all, radiant as Angelic Death, the resplendent soprano of Irene Jericho soars above the battlefield.”

These FotV vets are happy to be back, and no doubt will bring us a memorable performance! The band is currently promoting their second album, Satire X.

Cassandra Syndrome are:

  • Irene Jericho – Vocals
  • Chris Kackley – Lead Guitar
  • Joe Cariola – Bass
  • Jen Tonon – Rhythm guitar
  • Jay Jericho – Drums

Flames of Fury

“Flames of Fury (FoF) began in the Spring of 2009. Guitarist Jason Perez teamed up with metal vocalist powerhouse, Angelica Vargas. Both veterans of the NYC music scene they set out to create their vision of uncompromising metal.

The music was purposely designed as a blend of power, speed and musical chops with soaring, melodic vocals in a classic metal format with contemporary influences. The result exceeded their expectations so they decided to form a full band in order to pursue a future for FoF.”

Noted for their awesome stage performances, Flames of Fury are sure to be a hit at this year’s installment of FotV!

Flames of Fury are:

  • Angelica Vargas – Lead Vocals
  • Jason Perez – Lead Guitars, Vocals
  • Marko Galic – Guitars
  • Jimmy Peruta – Drums & Explosions

Where else are you going to see Lindz Riot (from Mary and the Black Lamb), Shield of Wings, The Unvoiced, Avariel, Deadmanswake, Angelical Tears, A Sound of Thunder, Solarsphere and Losing Scarlet all on one stage?

Where: Reggie’s Rock Club, 2109 South State St, Chicago, IL 60616

Tickets: $20 at the door; contact your favorite band about discounted pre-show tickets

See you there!   ~Robin

About the bands:

Lindz Riot of Mary and the Black Lamb (Oshawa, Ontario, Canada): Mary and the Black Lamb is the brainchild of Lindz Riot and Nixon Cutz, Mary and the Black Lamb began as a recording project that flourished into an up-and-coming live music group with the addition of Jordan Caverly, Kyle Cullen, and Scott Brindley. With their ability to combine the hooks and dance-ability of pop music with hard hitting power of metal Mary and the Black Lamb use their fable-driven imagery to challenge the notion of “childlike innocence”.

Shield of Wings (Chicago, IL):  Based out of the Chicagoland area, Shield of Wings is a symphonic metal band comprised of four members – Grace Meridan, James Gregor, Patrick Eulitz and Jeff Olsem. Over the years, the band lineup has changed, developing its own unique methods of writing, musical direction, and style.  Although the band has evolved through its members’ progressing abilities and imaginations, the music’s essence has remained true and embedded deep within the lyrics.

The Unvoiced (Montreal, Quebec, Canada):  The Unvoiced comes from the collaboration of the two founding members, Julien B. and Amélie G. Joined by Lucas P. as the second guitarist and soon after by Cédric A. and François D. as drummer and bass player. The band is complete around March and April 2007. In the following weeks and months, the practices and jams bring the creation of new songs to life.  The Unvoiced is ready to record their second album in 2011.

Avariel (Boston, MA):  Bold and dynamic, Avariel is Boston’s Symphonic Metal experience.  Avariel brings forth an original sound derived from both American and European metal influences, united with a distinct classical element and soaring female vocals. Dedicated to producing music that balances accessibility with creativity, and melody with aggression, Avariel has spent the last six years putting together a skilled lineup and refining a powerful sound.

Deadmanswake (Downers Grove, IL):  DEADMANSWAKE is a five-piece music machine with JP Soule and Josh Barker trading leads and rhythms on the front line.  Troll proves that the bass isn’t something to be shoved into the background with brilliant and talented grooves sure to keep you moving.  Topped off with Kryssie Ridolfi’s bluesy-yet-rock’n'roll vocal styles, DMW promises to rock your face while you sing along.  Recently seen opening for In This Moment, with their debut album “It Comes To This” flying off the shelves and a tour in the works, DMW  is about to show the world what the Chicago music scene really has to offer.

Angelical Tears (Oklahoma City, OK):  Since forming in October of 2006, Angelical Tears has stood as a unique musical voice in the Oklahoma music scene. The band’s sound is heavy but melodic. These elements all combine to create a metal sound with strong symphonic Goth elements. The combination of the vocals of Julia, pounding bass of Glenn, heavy guitars of Steven, thundering drums of Jeremy ‘JC’ Clifton, and the melodic keyboards of Robby Ray, give Angelical Tears a style and sound that sets them apart from their peers in the Oklahoma music scene.

A Sound of Thunder (Washington DC):  A Sound of Thunder is a Washington DC based, female fronted heavy metal band. Their four piece band consists of Josh Schwartz on guitar, Nina Osegueda on vocals, Jesse Keen on bass, and Chris Haren on drums. A Sound of Thunder conquers metal realms ranging from ’70s blues-based proto-metal a la Black Sabbath and early Judas Priest, to triumphant modern power metal a la Hammerfall and Primal Fear. Soaring vocals, incendiary instrumentals, and classic songs combine to form an unrelenting, unapologetic slab of metal to stand the test of time.

Solarsphere (Chicago, IL):  Solarsphere is a modern hard rock band from the Midwest United States with multiple influences ranging from metal to classical. The band’s sound includes a blend of aggressive guitars overlaid with melodic keyboards, and supported by a solid rhythmic foundation. The concept of the name is a fancy name for the sun and that something with so much light and energy can exist with darkness surrounding it is fascinating, much like life in general.

Losing Scarlet (Chicago, IL):  Losing Scarlet was formed in late 2007. Within three months, Losing Scarlet had written and recorded a six song demo and performed several shows. They were very well received and have steadily been building a fan base ever since. Losing Scarlet’s fan base is as diverse as how the band came to be. Fans range from pre-teen rockers to empty-nesters that enjoy original in your face rock and roll. 2008 was an opportunity to for the band to get to know each other musically and personally and to rehearse into a tight-knit group.
