Aperion are from Slovenia and perform a rather interesting mix of classical, gothic, folk, progressive, and metal. Among their ranks are a soprano, a cellist, a violist, a flute player, and, along with the conventional guitar, bass, and drums that come with every metal band, someone who has mastered the art of the didgeridoo. Interest piqued? Good. Mine was too when I heard the song “Black Flies” on the recently released World of Glass compilations, so I decided to look up some more.

Though the band first saw it’s current incarnation in 2004, Aperion just released their debut album Act of Hybris last month in parts of Europe. An album as varied as the elements in their music, the songs here go from straight up classical-influenced pieces to epic gothic folk metal, some even sung in a number of different languages. Vocalist Zala Hodnik shows a lot of diversity as well, switching between operatic soprano to low-pitched dark vocals. The band certainly has a unique sound that will appeal to fans of a number of metal subgenres. Below is the video for the song “Ü”, which might give you some idea of what this band is about.
Aperion also describe themselves as rather dramatic live performers. Judge for yourselves:
Aperion are:
- Zala Hodnik – Vocals
- Martin Bezjak – Viola
- Samo Dervisic – Cello
- Tinka Muha – Flute
- Crt Birsa – Guitars/Vocals
- Dani Telebar – Bass
- Nejc Kolar – Drums
- Ziga Birsa – Didgeridoo
You can follow the band on Facebook, Myspace, and their official website. You can also see more live performances on the band’s YouTube channel.
